First Friday’sPhoenix’s Monthly Art & Music Festival Brings Out the Best By Dean Pizarro When you stop watching reality shows and music videos on channels like MTV or BET, and you’re tired of going on to sites like Twitter to see what’s going on elsewhere, the city of Phoenix attempts to give fellow Arizonians a new alternative to laying on the couch watching TV or updating your Myspace profile. On the other hand, First Fridays also has plenty of food and snack stands as well as designer t-shirts and jeans from homegrown designers like Carl Aiken and his designer store/company titled, “Naked and Famous.” As for music, there are plenty of live DJ’s and emcees to walk in and see like fellow rapper Dusty-South, who is accompanied with a drummer providing beats and a piano player adding additional melodies and keys into Dusty’s political-charged lyrics, making them an entertaining trio to watch. DJ’s are also placed along the houses of the art galleries, to add to your First Friday experience. First Friday’s is surprisingly welcome to protests and demonstrations of all sorts, from movements to more funding for the science programs in Arizona schools. There are also plenty of t-shirts including protests against alleged racial profiling of Hispanics, pamphlets, and other items of support for their movements. There are other various events all happening simultaneously in First Friday’s, from breakdancing to acoustic guitar performances on street corners. Between foreign bracelets and jewelry of different religions being sold for cheap prices, to European incense burners, there’s nothing about First Fridays that doesn’t say “culture.” And if you just aren’t with it, you might-as-well run back to your computer or iPod. |
