The Big Bang

Even Mother Nature can’t stop Varsity Football in 44-14 route of Washington

By Zach Cheek

September 11th-As captains of both the Coronado and Washington Rams football teams went out for the pre-game coin toss at Edward T. Anderson Stadium, the home crowd repeatedly shouted, “C-O-R-O-N-A-D-O,” many wearing new “Heart.  Shield.  No Fear,” t-shirts.

Little did the Washington players know what electricity was about to strike them.

Despite shaky offensive execution by both teams early on, in the first quarter senior #10 T.J. Brown intercepted a Washington pass deep in Dons’ territory, returning the ball 40 yards and shifting momentum for the home team. By quarter’s end, Coronado held a 7-0 lead.

By second quarter’s beginning, lightning hit the dark night sky while, despite penalties, the Dons’ inexperienced offensive line began to dig in and protect junior quarterback #11 Alex Buya. With key blocks and strong running by senior running back #40 Shawn Martin, who had 135 rushing yards on 22 carries, the Dons scored another touchdown.  The touchdown itself came on a pass from Buya to Colten Anderson #42.  Anderson had two TDs the whole game. Then, with 1:59 on the clock, the referees called a lightning delay and the entire crowd had to evacuate the stands.

After the 40-minute delay, the crowd was back in the stands as this lighting storm seemed to electrify Coronado players and fans alike.

Going into the third quarter the Dons made another touchdown with in the 3rd. Brown played strong along with Buya. Buya was a major player bringing in two touchdowns with his speed and effort and sheer power. A fumble recovery by TJ. Brown #10 turned into a touchdown and kept adding on to the Don’s conquering lead, prompting the fans to get on their feet. By the end of the 3rd quarter, the Dons were up 44-0.  The outcome was inevitable.  Neither Washington nor Mother Nature could stop the Dons.

By game’s end, with 225 yards total rushing, 156 yards passing, and four forced turnovers on defense, the Dons prevailed 44-14.

With support of the Coronado community, including support of our marching band and cheer squad, the school prevailed. Next game is this upcoming Friday, September 18th going away to Seton Catholic High.  The players can really use the school’s support, so look forward to arranging transportation.
