Focusing on FundamentalsWrestling Team Season Preview By Zach Cheek “This year we will have great team unity,” said Joey Kredlo (12). All the unity comes with some key components, including how everyone acts on the mat. When wrestlers are out there practicing, they are thinking like wrestlers, everyone around them is a wrestler, nothing more, nothing less. The respect it takes to go 100% on a friend is endearing. To slam a teammate shows love. “This year we have a solid set of guys that have known each other for a long time, and some solid new guys that look promising,” said Kredlo (12) This Dons wrestling team has made “unofficial” captains or just someone to look up to, including: Andrew Patino (11) Kaleb Cisneros (12) Joey Kredlo (12) and Wyatt Richardson (11). “Our captains are always there, if we do something wrong they are there helping us work on it,” said Adrian Parra (12). The captains are supposed to lead the warm-ups, and bring the best out of the team. If the wrestlers are ever late to practice, don’t even show up to practice, or are just messing around. “The captains are always the example,” commented Coach Beracy. “The captains or even the upper-class men need to be an example. We go to Study Hall (a.k.a NHS’ After School Torturing) and the captains show they need to get their work done and pass every class”. During the team’s first week together, the wrestlers focused on team fundamentals. “We emphasize being physical, always looking to score. [I want everyone to be in the best condition],” commented Beracy. He is always pushing this team to be the best they can be, he wants his players to be 100% at all times, he gets irritated when he sees the wrestling squad going easy on each other. “We’ve been going back to basics like we always do. We don’t do quite as much as running as other sports but conditioning in general is a crucial part of practice,” commented Kredlo (12). Even outside of practice, however, some wrestlers are pushing their cardio conditioning. For example, on Thursday November 5 th, Wyatt Richardson (11) went onto the Anderson Field Track at 6:00 AM and ran five miles.” “Everyone has the potential to go to state, but it all [starts] in practice,” said Kaleb Cisneros (12) As this squad is coming up in their practice, be sure to support our Wrestling Dons at their first match against Campo Verde on December 3 rd. |
