Coronado Presents the Next High School Track Stars
It’s,yet another clear blue afternoon on a mid-February day.
The last remaining runners walk onto the track at about 3:20 p.m. Coach Jeff Carpenter as well as the other coaches that make-up the Varsity staff are present for the day’s practice.
There are about 40-plus kids that formulate Coronado’s Track & Field, along with fellow senior star athlete and last year’s state champ, Chauntrelle Johnson (12), as well as returning runners Coltin Anderson(12) and Dakota Gidley (12). The team sits down near the edge of the field for a couple of announcements before getting to work.
“Last year was good, shotput made it to state- -so did our other areas,” says head Coach Carpenter. “The boys 4×18 have made it to state for the last 9 years, and we’re hoping to continue it.”
It is only their second week of track practice, and they have two more weeks before their next competition begins. The team, however, has a lot to work with. “There’s a lot throwers, jumpers…we just need people to step up. This is a very young team, and we can improve on everything”.
“We also need more people out for track every year. Like we have a senior (Max Morales(12)) who’s never run track before but was previously a good cross-country runner. So the only thing we can improve on is the size of the team and looking for kids who can step-up,” added Coach Carpenter.
With so much personalities on the team, though, all eyes are on the seniors.
“We can only go as far as the seniors take us,” claimed fellow senior shot-putter Gernan Rebullar(12). But with most of the weight being carried by the juniors and seniors, the team remains calm and mellow. “It’s only the second week of practice, and track is a very mellow sport. But, other than that, the team is doing very well.”
“I feel motivated and inspired when I look over at my good pal, Spencer Simmons (10) and I read his bright, pink, tank -top, that says ‘Run Beast Run!’” said Daniel Brown (12).
The team is also armed with a good amount of coaches such as Varsity Football Coach Pasquel, Social Studies teacher Ms. Kemp, Coach Cano, Coach Kurth, and Coach Lame’.
With everything set in place, and their trials approaching steadily fast, the Coronado Track & Field squad definitley has what it takes to make it to state and beyond. This year’s track team represents the true meaning of ‘strength in numbers’. And the school doesn’t have to worry about our chances of going to state.
After all, they’ve done it before: run, beasts, run…
