Varsity volleyball places top ten in statewide tournaments
August 30, 2018
The volleyball team has been on a non-stop grind these first few weeks of school, traveling to Houston and Fort Worth. The team has been facing and competing with the top schools of Texas.
During the 2nd week of August, as students prepared for the beginning of school, the team traveled to Houston for the Pearland tournament. They faced top tier teams such as Westlake, Southlake Carol, and Amarillo, the defending 5A state champions. The club finished 8-1 and ended in 9th place out of 77 teams.
“Considering Pearland was our first tournament, and we did so well, I think we are going to have a great year,” Coach Lawrence said. “I am very proud of all we have accomplished and can’t wait to see what this season has in store for us.”
The following week, the girls took another trip to another highly competitive Texas town for the NISD tournament in Fort Worth. The team was led by their returning starters, Campbell Bowden, Alyssa Heist, Reese Mann, and Alex Hernandez. Bowden, a Baylor commit, finished the tournament with 139 kills. The girls ended the tournament 6-3 in 5th place out of 61 teams.
“The fifth-place finish at NISD really helped to boost our confidence going into the season,” Alex Hernandez said. “I think this will help us continue to play a strong and consistent game throughout district and playoffs.”
This weekend, the club traveled to Plano to compete in their last tournament before local preseason play begins. The girls finished 4-2 and got in 5th place.
“I think our last out of town tournament was extremely successful as we played top teams in Texas and ended up getting 5th,” senior starter Sofia Sifuentes said.
The team will play against Eastlake at home August 31st to open up the season.
