FFA place first, second in El Paso County Fair
September 24, 2018
The Coronado Future Farmers of America (FFA) competed in the El Paso County Fair on Thursday, September 20th at the El Paso County Coliseum.
The contestants took their animals-cows, goats, and chickens- out to the fairgrounds and showed them to the judges for the best animal. Students who placed 1st or 2nd can choose to sell their animal or take it to the next competition.
FFA students can also participate in an art competition or a baking competition. Those who are competing in art set up their artwork to be judged on creativity, style, and technique. Those who are competing in baked goods set up their food for the judges to try, with the most delicious item winning.
“I am most excited for the animal competitions because we have some pretty promising animals that I believe we can do really well with,” junior Lauren Bloss said.
Sarah Roderick, a junior in FFA, ran for the El Paso County Queen this Thursday. The County Queen is an award that requires the winner to be present at future FFA events and the Christmas Fair. To run for this position, Roderick had to give a public speech and an interview, both of which were judged. Roderick placed second in the El Paso County Queen competition.
In the poultry competition, Tye Claridge won grand champion and Kate Goodrich won reserve grand champion (second place). Coronado also placed second in steer show, a competition where kids from around the county raise steers over a yearlong period and compete in weight and appearance.
The FFA members will compete this Wednesday, September 26th, at the Southern New Mexico Fair.
