As the Westside Bowl approaches, Coronado football players review their season to prepare for the game against Franklin.

During the preseason, the team won against several big teams in local El Paso area, such as El Dorado, Carlsbad, Eastlake and Canutillo, despite losing their season opener to Andress. This left the team with a 4-1 standings overall and granted them the first seed in the district.

Their first district game was last Thursday against Montwood. The team lost leaving them with a 0-1 standing to start off districts, causing the team to drop to fourth overall.

“I feel we had a really good pre-season going 4-1, but we suffered a hard loss against Montwood last Thursday,” junior Charlie Samaniego said. “We are working really hard to prepare for the biggest game of the year.”

For both Coronado and Franklin, it is the biggest game of the year, with the winner receiving the Westside Bowl Trophy. Currently, Franklin is 4-2 overall, putting them at third in the district.

“I feel like it should be a good game; Franklin has a good team and so do we,” Coach Anderson said. “We just had a tough game against Montwood, but I have faith that the team will bounce back. I expect the student body to be loud and proud as they cheer for our team.”

The Senior Executive Committee sold Westside Bowl shirts last week to help promote the game. Student Council also put on a spirit week, known as Beak Week, dedicated to outperforming Franklin through dress up days.

“We are coming into this game with a week filled with hype and the win from last year,” junior Daniela Enriquez said. “I am also super excited to go cheer on our team loudly, and hopefully take the trophy home.”

The long awaited rivalry game will take place this Thursday, October 18th, at the Sun Bowl.
