On October 19, 2018, Khalid released the extended play (EP) “Suncity, ” a series of songs that discuss his love for El Paso and pay tribute to his hometown fans.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Khalid spent most of his childhood in El Paso, Texas. Since Khalid’s rise to stardom, he has always kept the “Sun City” close to his heart, as seen by his latest release. After his hit album “American Teen” was certified double platinum by Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), he began working on his first EP.

Khalid detailed the process of working on his EP over on his Twitter page. “I never go in thinking about making a hit record. I just go into the studio with people I love and respect and see what happens,” said Khalid, according to Billboard.

The night before his performance at the University of Texas at El Paso’s Don Haskins Center, he released his single titled “Better,” which peaked at #45 of the Billboard 100 chart. The song details his love for a girl that lives across the street from him.

One of the most popular songs from his EP is called “Saturday Nights,” which tells the story of a girl who is facing the inner struggle of following her parents values over her love for a boy. The song mixes a acoustic guitar with Khalid’s soft vocals to produce a melancholic sound.

Another song on his EP is called “Motion,” which describes Khalid’s deep adoration for his love. The song combines mellow vocals with a soft R&B sound that creates a overall feeling of falling in love for the first time.

One of the last songs in the EP is titled  “Suncity,” which his about his love and support of his hometown. The song conveys that no matter what transpires, his love for his hometown of El Paso will never fade away. The track mixes Hispanic-esque instrumentals with English vocals that show the mix of cultures the “Suncity” represents.

Although shorter than his previous albums, Khalid delivered a different experience from his past work. This love-centered EP is just a small glimpse into what’s yet to come from Khalid.
