Alternative homecoming at the aiport
Trees and decorations with words like “hope,” “love,” and “dream” are lit up in a different school’s colors each day to celebrate homecoming.
Homecoming: a lively event in which high school students of all grade levels gather in suits and dresses to dance with classmates, friends, and dates. As traditional as homecoming is, students will have to celebrate in an unconventional way due to the coronavirus pandemic this year. Instead of attending the usual homecoming activities, El Paso International Airport is lighting up as alternative.
Each night, the airport will light up the landscape with colors representing different high schools within the community. Students can walk down pathways and enjoy fresh air, public art, food trucks and live music on the weekend. Students planning to attend should be sure to wear their masks and practice social distancing.
“I think this can be such a good idea if it’s executed well and focuses on not spreading Covid-19,” senior Destiny Huff said. “Other than that, it’s amazing we can still… live our high school careers to the fullest possible even with everything going on.”
Coronado’s navy blue, white, and gold colors were displayed on Wednesday, Oct. 7. Students who still want to attend can park in the airport short term parking lot for $1 per hour.
