Senior Heavyn Proctor was named the girls’ varsity basketball team player of the week recently.

Senior wing Heavyn Proctor has devoted significant amounts of time and effort over the past four years to basketball, constantly striving for success. This year is no exception. She averaged 16 points and five rebounds in the girls’ varsity basketball team’s three games spanning from Dec. 18 to Jan. 2. Earlier this month, she was named player of the week by Head Coach Kristyn Flanagan.

“When I found out I was player of the week, I was very shocked and excited,” Proctor said. “It’s been hard to find motivation during this pandemic, but I’m happy I get the chance to be player of the week.”

Coach Flanagan began coaching the team in November, merely a week before the first game. Even so, she has been impressed with Proctor’s abilities and commitment.

“Heavyn plays very hard,” she said. “She is one of our best defenders and right now is leading us in scoring in district play. She works hard in practice, and she works very hard in games, too. She always has a good attitude. She had a steal which lead to a game winning [point] against Eastwood.”

Proctor’s teammates likewise notice her contributions.

“I have been playing with Heavyn since I transferred to Coronado my sophomore year,” senior guard Viviana Lopez said. “I think Heavyn is a player who gives it her all in games and even in practice. I think she executes a lot when we need her the most. She is also a very good teammate and makes sure we don’t let ourselves down whenever something isn’t going our way or we are struggling as a team.”

Members of the team are glad to have her for various reasons.

“Heavyn is a great teammate; she always brings us food to practice, such as donuts and cupcakes,” junior point guard Kelsey Finn joked. “On a more serious note, I think she has grown and improved a lot over the past year. She is…a very valuable player to our team.”

Even those no longer on the team recall how her passion influenced her work ethic.

“I played basketball for Coronado for three years, and all three years I played with Heavyn,” former guard Mackenzie Stewart said. “She was always out to succeed. She was always hungry for a win and very driven to the game. She dedicated a lot of her time to be the best player she could be for herself and her team.”

With her enthusiasm and determination, honoring Proctor seemed an obvious choice.

“I think Heavyn deserved to be player of the week,” Coach Flanagan said. “She never gives up and plays her heart out on the court.”

The girls’ varsity team will play Franklin High School at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
