As of late July, the bleachers in the Coronado Stadium have been declared condemned.
Due to the floorboards breaking and posing a risk to our student body, staff, and families, the bleachers are now being repaired.
It has been a month since the bleachers were condemned, and it has had an impact on the fall football season at our school.
Main Football Coach Michael Pry said, “Timing-wise wasn’t perfect, but in the end, it was what was best for our community.” “I’m glad they’re finally doing what needs to be done to fix it.”
The school must continually look for new stadiums that are available, which has an impact on the football team’s schedule because our home football games cannot be played here at our stadium anymore.
“Some games had to be moved, including our first home game versus Chapin, which was moved to El Paso High because it was originally scheduled for our stadium.”
“It has been difficult because we had to move many of our lower-level games, but we managed to make it work.” added Pry.
This has also affected the Coronado Bands’ Fall season as well. Since the band must be in the bleachers during football games, the Coronado band also has issues with the bleachers being condemned.
Band director James Smith said, “I’m thrilled that the bleachers are being repaired, which is wonderful, but right now we are a little uncomfortable not being able to use them.”
Since the band must be in the stands during football games, the bleachers’ condemnation has affected the Coronado band schedule. “Fortunately, it has only slightly affected our schedule. Both our maintenance department and management have been outstanding,” according to Smith.
“We came to an arrangement that construction will begin after the band has finished practicing in the morning, which at first was difficult because the band was practicing during zero hour, whilst construction was going on” Smith said, “We’ll make do with what we’ve got, but it’s as good as it gets.”
There is a chance the bleachers will not be done in time for just one home game. According to the school, it will take around 5 weeks for everything to be done and available for use.
