Staying healthy during the fall weather is particularly important as fall and winter are the most common seasons to get sick and spread viruses. It is crucial that we all take the necessary steps to ensure our safety and wellbeing.
“By working together, we can help protect each other and continue to provide the best possible education for our students,” nurse Karla Marquez-Ortiz said.
The reason a person gets sick is because the dry fall or winter air allows the flu virus to spread faster. It is very common for people to stay indoors during this season, which allows the viruses to spread or pass more easily from one person to another.
During this season, you need to take precautions. Some tips to stay healthy are to get the flu shot. The flu shot causes antibodies to develop in the body one or two weeks after the vaccination; those antibodies provide protection against infection.
Washing your hands with soap removes any germs from your hands and prevents infections. Germs can get to the body through eyes, nose, and mouth, and that is what causes sickness. Regular hand-washing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs and infections.
“Please make it a habit to wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds,” Marquez-Ortiz said.
Another way to diminish illness is to start taking vitamin D. Vitamin D reduces the risk of any type of infection or a common cold and protects the physical barrier, cellular natural immunity, and adaptive immunity.
“If you are feeling unwell, exhibiting any symptoms of illness, or have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for a contagious disease, it is imperative that you stay home and seek medical advice as needed,” Marquez-Ortiz said.
Staying healthy needs to be a priority for people of all ages. The change of weather and season can change our routines and spread viruses. Taking the precautions listed above will help you prevent sickness.
