The El Paso ISD board voted on numerous upgrades and new constructions around all of their campuses in the 2016 bond. Coronado High School got one of these bond projects. The project included plans for a new field house, renovations to both gyms, demolition of the old A and B buildings, and constructions of brand new A and B buildings, as well as a brand new courtyard.
Constructions has been going on since 2019 and is set to be complete in 2024. The latest completion will be of the new B building. It will be a brand new 3 story building that will be connected internally to A building.
Mr. Detinger stated that the current date of completion of all of construction will be the Saturday after spring break. As of now, the new B building will open next semester.
All of the English teachers will be moved to B building next semester. According to Mr. Detinger, the new building will contain Social studies classrooms, English classes, Art classes, and foreign language classes.
Some English teachers have expressed concern about difficulty with the new technology and they think they are going to struggle with getting used to the promethean boards. Others say they are very excited with the new technology.
Others have expressed concerns about student tardiness once the new building opens because the courtyard will not be finished. If you’ve ever tried to leave A building during passing period, then you know how crowded it is as there is really only 2 exits that are being used. With the new building being open and the courtyard being closed, students will have to leave through A building, causing even more congestion.
Some described the move as “bitter sweet” because it will be the first time that C building will not contain English classes. They also have some concerns with the library staying in C building, as they feel it doesn’t make sense to have English classes without the library.
English teachers are excited to personalize their new room as they feel the new buildings are very bland and filled with distractions as student are sandwiched by windows on the left and right, with one seeing into the hallway and the other facing the outside.
