PWHA (Poverty In Women’s Health Awareness Alliance) helps women that are underserved in our community. The club contributes a lot to the community by frequently hosting drives.
“A few of the drives we’ve done in the past are donations of children’s books and then we did another one of feminine hygiene products and diapers,” Valentina Hernandez-the social media manager of PWHA said.
The childrens book drive which occurred in November 2023 involved collecting 700 books for two underserved elementary schools in El Paso. PWHA’s mission is to help underserved communities al over El Paso-even beyond just women.
This is just a few of the many drives PWHA has hosted. Their on-going drive, which ends on February 27th involves collecting baby clothes (gently used or new), diapers, tampons, and pads.
President of PWHA, Jiya Patel, founded this club on a need basis as she noticed underserved communities that could use the extra assistance.
“In El Paso, there’s many organizations that benefit women and children and I wanted to focus on those groups. I feel that they are generally overlooked causes,” Patel said.
The club is beneficial towards the community but also beneficial to those who donate.
“Our club gives community service hours if you donate to the drive. You receive 2 hours for every item you donate and 10 hours if you donate 4 items,” Hernandez said.
PWHA has meetings once every two months during lunch. Follow them @CHS_PWHA on Instagram to keep up with the latest updates.
