In most recent years, school ID’s have become an essential part of student’s everyday apparel. Although they have become highly enforced on campuses, student tend to forget the importance of wearing their ID. Due to the increase of gun violence in the past decade, ID’s offer a more secure and comfortable environment for both students and staff.
El Paso ISD has taken extra precautions to take care of their open campuses by implementing a mandatory student ID policy.
“We want [them] for safety reasons,” Assistant Principle, Mrs. Piñon said. “I’ve been in a situation before at different school where we’ve been in a lockdown situation, and we have to be able to quickly identify who our students and staff are.”
School IDs are now being sold for $10 for any students who currently do not have one.
“ID’s can be purchased at the business agent, and they’re made right across the way,” Mrs. Piñon said, “If there is an issue and you can’t purchase and ID, you just let one of your administrators know and we can work with you on that.”
Along with students, staff and administrators are always required to wear their IDs too.
“All of your administrators, teachers, and staff are all wearing their ID’s as well,” Mrs. Piñon said, “That is just to make sure that anyone who is not supposed to be in the building is not allowed in.”
Students are now facing consequences over not following this mandatory policy.
“Just like tardies, for ID’s there could be a consequence of possible lunch detention,” Piñon said.
But the campus is not only disciplining students, but also rewarding those who do follow the ID policy.
“We also are looking at our PBIS Team [Positive Behavior intervention Team],” Piñon said, “were looking at rewards as well, for following the safe measures in the first place.”
If students still need an ID they can get them before school, during lunch, or after school.
