The upcoming 2024 Presidential Election is taking place Tuesday, November 5th. As this day approaches, students are being encouraged to register to vote.
“Voter’s registration is taking place October 23rd through the 24th, all day in the library,” librarian Kimberly Edwinson said.
Student registration allows students to voice their opinions about what is going on in the world, their state and their community.
“I am really excited to just have turned 18 to be able to vote, because I’ve always been into politics, and I think it is really important to show up for your community and voice your opinion,” senior Valentina Hernandez said.
Edwinson emphasizes the importance of personal opinion and staying informed as student voters.
“If you want to have a voice, if you have an opinion about who is going to lead this nation, lead this state, lead this city, it is important to register to vote and vote at all elections and be an informed voter,” Edwinson said.
As this is the first student registration being done at Coronado High School, the number of students ready to register is uncertain.
“With the ease of being able to register here on campus, while we have a deputy on campus allowing students to get expedited, I hope with us making it as easy as possible for students, people will have more access, and we will have more students ready to vote if they choose,” Edwinson says.
Student voting registration is being done through Government and Economics classes, allowing students the ability to voice their opinions with ease.
“As it is being done through the social studies department, teaching students to be well rounded citizens, it is done through their curriculum to register students to vote,” Edwinson said.
Voicing their opinion matters greatly to many students, allowing them to make decisions that affect their community as well as the nation.
“I think voting should matter to everyone, because politics affects absolutely everyone, even those who can’t vote. I think it’s just important to be informed about politics and to choose the right candidate that represents your values and future,” Hernandez said.
Early voting begins Monday October 21st, and Election Day is Tuesday November 5th. El Paso ISD has closed campuses on election day to encourage students and teachers to participate in voting. Visit epcountyvotes.com to see more information on poles and voting.
