The Academic Decathlon team brought home a win for the t-birds this past month. Competing against many other schools in El Paso, Coronado was one of the few who passed on to State competition.
Mrs. Catherine Lemar, director of the Academic Decathlon team informs us on what opportunities can be found within the team.
“Academic Decathlon is a student competition where they compete in different categories including essay, speech, and interview,” Lamar said, “The others are subjective/multiple-choice tests on history math, art, science, etc.”.
There are multiple teams from schools across the region that compete for a spot in the state competition. Each student must compete in every single category and once each team member’s points are added, awards are allotted to teams accordingly.
A few students who are on the team include Analiesa Jones, Benjamin Ingram, and Xiaoxi Xi. Analiesa Jones, senior student and president of the team, joined AcaDec after spirit night in her freshmen year.
Jones feels that AcaDec is something all students should consider if they want to learn about important issues and get outside of their comfort zone.
“It may seem very odd at first when you realize all we do is take tests all day, but it’s honestly very fun and eye-opening when you read about these issues about stuff you don’t think you’d get interested in at first but it is very interesting”, Jones said.
The team meets every morning at 7:50 A.M. in preparation of their travel to Frisco, Texas at the end of February for the state championship.
AcaDec provides great opportunities for students and helps them broaden their social skills.
