Football Season: first look
As summer comes to the end we all prepare for the school year. Figuring out our new classes, meeting new people, but for some it’s all about football season. The football season begins the day us students go back to school. These players have been practicing all summer for what hopes to be a great year.
“We have been working very hard trying to become a better team this offseason, and we hope it will show this year on the field,” junior Ben Carney said. “We hope to play very well in district and obviously keep the Westside Bowl trophy with us.”
The team has a very different look this year with many new coaches joining the staff, and several new faces on the team. One of these names that will make an impact to the team and the city is Jack Niland. Niland is returning to El Paso from a prestige athletics school at IMG in Florida. Niland is certain to make a difference on the line with his 6’8 frame.
“I feel great about this season,” senior Tommy Barrett said. “We have lots of new players and returning starters that will all help us out this year.” The boys will be the first to play in the new and revamped district 1-6A. Eastwood and El Dorado have both dropped to 5A schools meaning they did not have enough enrolled students to be a 6A school.
This leaves only 5 schools in our district including Coronado.
“With the changes in our district we will have less teams in district, which means fewer games and fewer injuries,” Barrett said.
The team will hope to make everyone proud this year as they go about their business. The team will take on Andress at home on Friday, August 31.
