Russian airspace closes due to Ukraine invasion

In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine the United States, Canada, and the European Union currently have all issued bans on Russian aircraft entering their airspace.

President Biden has ordered an effective ban of Russian aircraft entering the US due to the Ukraine invasion. While there are currently no restrictions, it is expected that the Russian government will order a ban on American aircraft entering Russia, which will impact travel around the world.

“The order prohibits all passenger, cargo, all aircraft owned, certified, operated, registered, chartered, leased, or controlled by, for, or for the benefit of, a person who is a citizen of Russia,” The U.S Department of Transportation said.

The impact of Russian companies, including travel, being banned around the world is huge. Airlines must reroute flights in order for passengers to get to popular destinations such as Miami, Washington D.C, New York, Los Angeles, The Caribbean, etc, however, not all destinations are off-limits.

“So places like Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, Cancun in Mexico, those destinations are not off limits,” Ian Petchenik said on the global tracking service on FlightRadar24.

There was already a violation of Canada’s ban on Russian air travel when an Aeroflot flight from Miami to Moscow was declared a humanitarian mission. Aeroflot issued a statement that the flight was necessary.

“We will not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement action and other measures to prevent future violations,” Transport Canada said in Twitter.

The bans are not expected to have that large of an impact on US travelers beyond flights spending more time in the air before reaching their destination. However, there have been 300 cargo flights in the past month that were affected by this change going to China, the West Coast, and Alaska.

“So you’re adding a significant amount of time and a significant amount of distance covered, which means a significant amount of fuel burned as well,” said Ian Petchenik.

The purpose of the ban on Russian aircraft entering the US is to lengthen flights, burning more fuel and costing more money to maintain, causing strain on the Russian economy.

Due to the invasion of Ukraine and more countries coming together to oppose Russia more moves aimed at hurting Russia’s economy are likely soon.
