Winter Guard is an indoor art performance devrived from military ceremonies. Guard specializes in choreograhy and consists of flags, rifles, and other kinds of props. Winter Guard is the next thing guard members move on to after Marching Band season.
“Winter Guard is a team where we compete with flags. For example, in marching season, we’re the visual part of the show. The flags you see, the rifles, that’s basically what we do,” Guard member Valerie Ronquillo said.
The season will begin in February, and will end around April. Winter Guard hopes to compete in WGI which stands for Winter Guard International in San Antonio.
Katheryn Andrade has been the Winter Guard instructor at Coronado for 7 years, alongside two other instructors, Briana Baeza and Joel Estrada.
When asked about the season, Andrade stated, “Our season starts February 17th and ends on April 6th, and we have competitions on Saturdays. We are planning to hopefully travel to what’s called a WGI regional, and this year we hope to go to San Antonio”.
Auditions usually happen after Marching season is complete, around November. “We had Winter Guard tryouts November 16th . For tryouts, the kids had to learn like about a minute long routine and they had to perform it in front of two judges. We’ll host auditions again in May for next year’s marching season.”
“Anybody can audition, you don’t have to have any experience, we’ll teach everything you need to know. It helps if you have dance background or gymnastics, but we have kids who have none of that and do really well.”
The Winter Guard season will officially start in February. If you’re interested in joining, look out for updates around May!
