Coronado Dance Company will be participating in the upcoming EPISD Border Dance Festival, which will take place at Bowie High School on February 10, 2024. Dance Company has been participating in this competition for seven years. This and other competitions aim to prepare the team for the competition in Anaheim, California, in May 2024.
“We are very excited, especially to go to Anaheim,” Faith Scanlon, Dance Company member, said.
The team will perform a variety of styles, such as jazz, hip-hop, and contemporary. The local competitions, although being against fellow schools in the El Paso district, will help the team experience a competitive atmosphere with other talented teams. Countless hours of rehearsals, conditioning, and rest have helped the team prepare for the intense competition season.
“We practice about six to seven hours a week in addition to other hours of daily practice,” Scanlon said.
The team has invited guest choreographers, including Ivan Marquez, Daniela Caballero, and Ana Karen Valdez, alongside the company’s own team members, to teach the competition pieces. Coronado Dance Company will showcase small groups of 11 dancers and large groups of 24 dancers, as well as solos from senior dancers.
“All our competition pieces are my favorite,” Roberta Valdiviez, Dance Company teacher, said. “It’s hard to choose just one because the dancers are amazing in all of them”.
The Coronado Dance Company is currently preparing for this year’s upcoming competition season and hopes to bring several trophies home.
