The Softball team is looking for players to join the team. No experience is necessary, and you will be taught everything you need to know. Grades and attendance are important to stay in the team, as well as having a good attitude and dedication.
“We do tryouts, but kids that are inexperienced will play at a lower level and we’ll help teach them.” stated Jason Blair, Softball Coach. “No experience is necessary, if you can chew gum and walk, come out play!” says Blair.
Sports focus on attitude and mentality with their players and try to have fun. “Their attitude and their effort are what makes a team for me.” Blair replied. “Everything else, as far as instruction and learning the game, that’s what coaches are for. We have expectations for their grades and attendance, things they should be doing as a student. But other than that, come and have some fun playing softball!” said Blair.
This is Blair’s 27th year being a coach and he has been coaching softball for over 18 years. Before Coronado, he coached softball at Parkland, Isle, and he even started the program at Horizon. Besides softball, he also has experience coaching football. His daughter plays softball at UTEP, and he has also coached some of her teams.
Varsity player, Melanie Ronquillo joined Softball in 6th Grade when she was a student at Lincoln Middle School. Before that, she was working up to be in the place she is in now.
“I just try to be consistent with showing up to practice so I could build that bond with all the players and make friends. I’d say it took about three weeks to a month to get that special bond with my team. Coach Blair is an amazing coach. He’s always looking for what’s best for us and just pushing us to be the best we can be.” stated Ronquillo.
“Be consistent, do what your coach asks. And if you know what he expects from you, try to meet that expectation and go beyond. Just show up to all the practices and put in your own work apart from the practices at school.” said Ronquillo.
Coach Blair has high hopes for this season. If you’re interested in joining softball, make sure to get in contact with him.
