Beloved artist Mac Miller passed away on September 7th, 2018 at just 26 from an accidental drug overdose. His music touched individuals all around the world, portraying a different emotion in each album. Following his passing, Warner Records, has released 2 albums that he had previously recorded to continue his honor. The first one being Swimming in Circles Box Set (2018-2020), and the most recent one being released on January 17th, Balloonerism.
Balloonerism has 14 tracks including “DJ’s Chord Organ” featuring SZA and “Transformations” featuring Miller’s alter ego, Delusional Thomas. The album was recorded in 2014 and blends jazz music with hip-hop elements, reflecting Miller’s experimental take to music. Although the album was important to Miller, it remained unreleased. His estate recognized the significance of the album and decided to release it explaining how the album reflected his artistic fearlessness and him as a person.
Senior Nicholas Crespo states that when the album was released it aligned with his own life and personal evolution.
“I think for me the most beautiful part of Mac’s new album is the timing of it all. His first posthumous album was dropped right before our freshman year and now exactly five years later we get a new one to end high school,” Crespo said.
He also explains how he got a final album from him when he is about to face a major change in his life.
“Balloonerism’s lyrical themes of transitioning and leaving to a new place, along with its experimental style really resonates with me as it’s like a full circle moment in my own life,” Crespo said.
The album cover is a painting of Miller by Alim Smith and portrays Miller’s artistic vision. When the album was released, an animated short film by Samuel Jerome Mason was released on Amazon Prime and some theatres. All the revenue went to Mac Miller Fund, which aids youth arts programs and community building.
Crespo also says that the album’s experimental take shows the beauty of his and his listener’s life and the sentiment of his passing.
“The album kind of celebrates the beauty of change which not only aligns with his tragic passing but also the emotional step so many of my peers will be taking in the upcoming months as we leave home for the first time,” Crespo said.
Balloonerism was very well received by people all over the world and resonated with many due to the sincere lyrics and rhythms. The album gave listeners insight to Miller’s creative process and personal struggles and serves as a tribute to his legacy. Mac Miller’s death was tragic for many, but this album gave his listeners one last piece of him.
