The Coronado Dance Company left their hearts out on the stage at Bowie High School on February 6th at the EPISD Border Dance Competition. The team performed a total of 6 group dances and 4 soloists. They took many titles home including:
1 st place: large contemporary, small group open, large group open, solo contemporary, solo open, highest scoring solo overall, highest scoring group overall,
2 nd place: small group jazz, solo contemporary, solo open
3 rd place: large group jazz.
The team dedicated countless hours to after school practices in preparation for the competition, facing off against talented schools across El Paso, including Franklin, Eastwood, Jefferson/Silva, El Paso High, Burges, Del Valle, YWLA, Andress, Bowie, and Montwood.
Valeria Acuña, Co-Captain of the team, further informs about the hard work that was put into each of the competition routines.
“Although the journey for preparing for competition was tedious and at times difficult, the end result made it all worth it,” Acuña said.
Contributing even more to their success, all Dance Company routines were choreographed by students, showcasing the creativity and leadership of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Choreographers Ariadne Mena (10), Ana Paula Molinar (10), Paula Martinez (11), Elisa Weist (11), and Valeria Acuña (12), brought their artistic visions to life, leaving them satisfied with the results.
Student choreographer Elisa Weist’s piece “In This Shirt” won the team the grand champions title for the second consecutive year-an award is given to the highest scoring routine of all group performances, solos, duets, and trios across various styles.
“I feel an overwhelming sense of pride in the team and all our hard work”, Weist said, regarding the win.
This victory sets the stage for the teams’ upcoming trip to Anaheim, CA. in May where they will compete in a prestigious and highly advanced competition.
It was a successful weekend for the girls and their hard work and determination was reflected by the outcome.
