Sophia Spier is a senior who fills her time with her true passions, helping others and singing. Spier started singing at sixyears old and is a three-time Texas All-Stater who has won numerous medals at UIL Texas State Solo & Ensemble Competition for choir. But her determination and passion doesn’t end there. Spier is the chapter coordinator of Once Upon a Room.
Once Upon a Room is a national organization that aims to brighten up the lives of children in hospitals fighting serious illnesses or acute trauma, by providing them with a room make over.
“For setting up and planning, the child life specialists give forms to each of their patients, and they can choose if theywant their room done and what theme they want,” Spier said. “My mom and I shop online for everything, and I make custom banners and a pillow days before.”
Spier states how truly rewarding helping children in hospitals is and the absolute sense of fulfillment she gets when she sees their reactions.
“My favorite part is the patients’ reactions and appreciation for their new hospital rooms! It is so special because it adds light into the darkness that they face everyday in the hospital, “Spier said.
Spier’s choir teacher, Jennifer Mercado, describes Spier as a dedicated and selfless student who always is looking for ways to help others.
“Sophie is a caring individual who always goes out of her way to do her best and help others. She is dedicated to her studies and extracurricular activities, always striving to succeed. Her selfless nature is evident in her willingness to putothers’ needs and feelings before her own,” Mercado said.
Mercado also states that Spier’s kindness and responsibility makes her the perfect person to run Once Upon a Room.
“Sophie never hesitates to lend a helping hand and thrives to foster success in her peers and environment. She is responsible and reliable; you can always count on Sophie to fulfil any task that is assigned to her. Sophie is a natural leader. Leading by example, she inspires others to do their best.”
Spier’s personal drive and motivation helps her carry out this project to its best abilities.
“Sophie is self-driven, setting high goals for herself and working tirelessly to achieve them. I am sure that Sophie is the perfect person for this beautiful project,” Mercado said.
“I’ve been doing this for almost 1 year, and it is not a typical club that people can join- but it’s available for people who DM me or the Instagram account who have an interest to join! I currently have a list of volunteers,” Spier said.
